The Big River “Izabella”

Up for sale is a brand new Big River “Izabella” HSS S-Style guitar. The body is made from Catalpa, similar to ash but weighs considerably less and has a much more pronounced grain. Because of catalpa’s wicked grain pattern this was an open grained nitro finish. The body was prepped and sanded, given 4 coats of our custom mixed Sonic Blue, then sanded with 400. The next day the body was given four more coats and the. sanded with 600. Finally I gave it two more coats of Sonic Blue, and five coats of clear. When it was ready I sanded it with 800 grit to make the finish super smooth but will still allow you to see the grain.

The neck is a licensed Roasted Maple with a Rosewood fingerboard, 9.5” radius, 22 medium jumbo nickel/stainless steel frets that have rounded and hidden ends, a medium C shape with a bone nut. I finished the neck with several thin coats of lacquer, then it was buffed to a silky satin finish. This is one smooth and killer neck. For tuners I went with a set of Hip Shot Open Geared Locking Tuners.

To add in the stability, the bridge is modern Fender American 2 pt Trem with a big block. With the open grain and this Trem, you’ve got an incredibly resonant guitar that has sustain for days.

For the electronics, I built a harness consisting of an Oak 5way switch, 250k CTS pots, a CTS blender pot, .047 Mallory Mustard Cap, a PureTone 4 prong input jack for added stability and Gavitt cloth push back wire throughout. The blender allows you to add as much or little of neck and bridge into any position, opening up several incredibly useful tones you won’t find on a standard strat. These are the positions with the blender pot engaged…

Position 1.) Bridge + Neck

Position 2.) Bridge + Middle + Neck

Position 3.) Middle

Position 4.) Neck + Middle + Bridge

Position 5.) Neck + Bridge

The real treat with this strat are the pickups. I went with a set of Lollar (Blackface) 64’s in the neck and middle and a Lollar Imperial in the bridge. Here is what Lollar has to say about these pickups….

Imperial - “The Imperial® Humbucker is our take on the original 1950s P.A.F. pickup. We’ve designed the Imperial® to draw from the long revered qualities of the original P.A.F.s while improving on their frequency balance and giving a slight boost to the bridge pickup’s output.” Anyway, the Izabella is an absolute tone machine!

The Big River Izabella is an incredible S-Style guitar, made with top of line components. From the killer finish, to it’s light weight , it’s stability to its incredible pickups. This guitar looks, plays and sounds like a strat that punches way out of it weight class.

Here at Big River we've started doing our
own Nitro finishing on guitars. We mix our
own colors to try and closely match the
classic colors of the golden age of Strats
and Tele's . We are also mixing some
more modern Fender colors as well.
Some guitars will be relic'd, some will just
have that incredible old school feel.

My instruments receive a full setup, with a
deep body/neck cleaning and polish. All
gloss maple boards are polished, while all
rosewood/darker boards receive an F1 &
lemon oil treatment. make sure all
electronics are in working order and if
something under the hood needs to be
changed, I make that determination
based upon what type/year guitar im
working on. But either way I am upfront in
my listing. Guitars are set up with
D'Addario XL 9-42's. Action is checked.
and adjusted to Low-Med if necessary.
and tuning and intonation is set on all
instruments before I pack them to ship.

It always made me feel good when i
pulled a guitar out of a box and basically
only had to tune it up to pitch and away
you go, so I try to afford you the buyer, of
that same courtesy. Understand though
set ups are a truly personal thing. I
cannot guarantee everything but I try to
use the bell curve when it comes to
setting up instruments, so even if there is
something you wanted changed it is not a
big ordeal. Feel free to ask if there is
something specific you would like.
