I am offering for sale a very rare Beogram 4000 turntable, first manufactured by Bang & Olufsen in Denmark in 1971. Combining innovative technology, precise engineering and visionary design by Jacob Jensen, the Beogram 4000 became B&O's signature product, setting a new standard for high-end home audio. In recognition of its stunning design, the Beogram 4000 was selected by the Museum Of Modern Art for its permanent design collection. To this day it is highly coveted by art museums, collectors of mid-century design and, of course, serious audio buffs.
Besides its combination of style and simplicity, the Beogram 4000 was the first fully automated tangential-tracking turntable in history. Thus, the pickup moved in a straight line to the record center, always remaining parallel to the groove. The tone arm, cartridge and motor unit were all designed to operate as one integrated unit, achieving an extraordinary suppression of vinyl surface noise and distortion. As tested by Hi-Fi News, "quiet passages and the gaps between tracks sound almost CD-clean."
Because the technological advances in the Beogram 4000 required a superlative pickup, B&O designed a number of integrated cartridges/styli to maximize performance. This rare for sale turntable comes with three (!) of the finest cartridges B&O ever manufactured (these individually sell for $500-1,000 used) and all three have been play-tested.
1. SP-15. This is the original cartridge with box and supporting materials and tools.
2. MMC 20CL. The successor to the SP-15. Also with box and tools (see pic).
3. MMC6000. Considered the pinnacle of B&O cartridges and optimized for playback of quadraphonic, as well as mono
and stereo.
This turntable has had one owner and was sparingly used. It has recently undergone a thorough inspection and restoration by the only audio technician in the U.S.A. authorized within B&O's Classic repair program. The turntable is in perfect operating condition and is superb cosmetically (with only light scratches on the dust cover). The turntable will be available for viewing by appointment and I am only offering local pickup in Asheville, N.C. If you are a serious buyer, serious offers will be considered.
