Very Rare Baldwin Exterminator E-1 combo amp, as used by Neil Young on tour, back in the day. This is the big brother to the Baldwin C-1, as used by Willie Nelson. Willie uses the Baldwin C-1 because the Baldwin amp line has a 24 volt phantom power source at the input jacks, accessible by use of a tip, ring, sleeve plug, that Willie needs to power the active Baldwin pickup that he had transferred and installed in "Trigger" after a drunk famously crushed his Baldwin guitar.
Why did Neil use an Exterminator with Crazy Horse? - probably to add girth, percussive projection and bottom..... The Exterminator has a closed, sealed back, cabinet. The rest of his rig, (Magnatones and Fenders), are open back, loose sounding amps. The E-1's closed back gives the amp a tight punchy sound, and the 2-15's provide a mighty "thump".
The amp is fully functional with some cosmetic issues. It has five "Supersound" auxiliary "Vegomatic" push button switches for tone control. The amp has a speaker compliment of two 15 inch speakers, two 12 inch speakers and two 7 inch speakers. One of the 15s and two of the 7's appear to be original. The two 12s and one 15" are replacements.
History lesson: It's the mid 60's and there is a race to make the biggest amp. Vox has the Superbeatle, Rickenbacker has it's Transonic, and Baldwin, not to be outdone, introduces the Exterminator. And if you didn't know how dangerous and powerful this amp was, Baldwin let you know, with a special "disclaimer/warning sticker on the back of the chassis, stating, " The D. H. Baldwin Company will not be responsible for hearing impairment or loss due to the use of this amplifier".
The blue side panels have some scuffing and tears, and the edge trim is held on by tacks, but everything functions on this 100 watt RMS, 250 watt peak power amp. Channel one has Reverb and Tremolo as well as Volume Bass Treble, and "Supersound"
In addition to the standard tone controls, channel one has five pushbutton/slide Supersound switches that give instant access to a wide variety of pre-set tones, using a network of capacitors and inductors. There is a 3 way toggle switch that allows use of: 1. only the standard tone controls, or 2. only the Supersound tone controls, or 3. a third position that allows both together. (Choose a Supersound tone setting, and augment it with the standard bass and treble controls).
There are two little dolly wheels at the back of the cabinet. When you tilt the amp backwards, the wheels allow it to be rolled around like a hand truck.
What a wierd, wild and wacky amp it is! You'll be the only kid on the block with one of these! There weren't very many made, and there can't be many left, (and fully functional), after 57 years!
