Good day from dB HiFi

My vintage HiFi journey began in 1972 when today’s vintage was contemporary.
As a wide eyed 12yr. old (as often as possible) Visiting all the HiFi shops to ogle at all the brand new Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui, JVC. Kenwood, Carver and Technics. combined with JBL, KLH, AR, Ohm, ESS and other high quality loudspeakers and other vintage gear from days past. Including many musical instruments and most equipment for recording studios or bands!

My teenage budget realities resulted in a purchase of a used receiver from Radio-Shack combined with a set of junk speakers from the local dump. However an oath was made and honored. Fast forward decades later after a lengthy education then becoming a full time technician for the State. I have enjoyed good fortune of often acquiring multiple pieces of vintage HiFi equipment on a monthly basis. Then comparing testing and restoring them when needed. I am now 1000% committed to enthusiastically sharing my passion for vintage HiFi systems with you all my fellows and friends. I’m happy to share with you my newest find from
a local Florida collector and a close friend. 1st.

Thank you for viewing a 1 owner AKAI GX-630D-SS reel to reel tape deck. It has been cleaned and freshly serviced this week. It is a 4 track recording studio version of the orig. bulletproof GX-630 series Decks!

The GX-630D-SS and
GX-230 little brother
were the last of Akai’s Surround Sound series.
Both these models featured the Quadra Sync feature which meant that they could be used as a mini home-studio, much like the Teac A3440S. In ‘Quadra Sync’ mode, the pre-recorded tracks could be monitored via the record head, avoiding the time delay that’s normally associated with the playback head and thus giving ‘Sync’ for the subsequent recorded parts. The recorder could be used in either 4-channel surround sound or stereo modes.
A three motor drive system was employed, with Akai’s new CPG (Centre Pole Frequency Generated) AC servo motor for direct capstan drive and two eddy current outer rotor motors for the reels. A pitch control function gave a 5% playing speed modulation. Other features included four microphone inputs, two headphone outputs and a 10½ ‘” reel capacity.

It will need one pot replaced ASAP if you want it 100% original.
There is one working now but not original.
