Extremely RARE interchangeable pickup guitars. One is a Gibson Les Paul Standard and the oother is a Gibson Les Paul Custom.
During my research this is what I have found out.
These were only issued only to their top dealers. They were issued to dealers so that buyers could try different pickups in several configurations and order the guitar that best fit their desires in the perfect guitar with the perfect pickups to fit their style.
" In 1999/2000 Gibson offered larger dealers one of these RARE models in order to sell Genuine Gibson Pickups as part of their " Go Ahead & Gear Up campaign ".
In my research I have had a few individuals state that possibly "as few as only 20 or maybe as many as 40 of these guitars ever existed."
"Most are Les Paul Standards unfinished guitars literally taken directly the production line", but just so happens I have one in a Custom configuration. :" I have never seen a custom version of one of these. Maybe 1 of very few if not 1 of 1. Normally they were fitted with odd non matching hardware."
"Gibson then routed out pickup block housings on the back of the guitar and produced removable pick up mounts for a range of demo pickups to allow quick swap of pickup types.
"This allows matching type bridge and neck sets, or your come up with your unigue sound by chosing the pickups you want in your guitar"
This is not the "Gibson Les Paul Push Tone" which allowed pickup swapping as well, these are true Dealer only demo models.
I have only seen one other listed and that was several years ago and it was a standard. There is a video online on YouTube regarding these guitars.
Regarding condition of both guitars.
The standard has some buckle rash and a chip out of the lower neck. See attached photos. The custom is in excellent condition. Both have a very nice feel to them. Both play very nice and work as they should. The blocks in the custom come in and out with a snug fit, but on the standard, the blocks are a very tight fit and need a little help with a some tapping to get them to come out and go in. A little sanding and they would go in and out with no problems. Both have a hole drilled in the cutaway. One person told me that was they could lower a tool down the hole versus removing the switch cover all the time?? Not sure why those are there, but both are factory holes.
I always thought it would be a good idea to have someone make some mahogony blocks and get some different pickups, so that I could have a complete set, but never even looked into it.
I had originally thought of listing them seperately, but since I dont have any of the pickups that normally come with the guitars other than what is installed in them, I thought they should go together so you can swap pickups back and forth.
If you have any questions or could provide some information I have not included, please message me. I may consider selling them seperate if someone wants to make an offer that way and I can make a seperate listing on Reverb to accomodate that.
Don't miss rare oppurtunity on these 2 guitars. You may never see one or in this case two ever again.
Dont forget to check out my other guitars and gear currently in my shop. I will continue adding more in the near future.
I am happy to do a call or FaceTime for serious buyers. All guitars I have for sale are from my personal collection. Thank you for looking!
It has always sat in my humidified temperature controlled guitar room in the case.
Please review all photos and ask for additional photos or let me know any questions you have before buying.
I do my best to give several photos and explain the guitar as best as possible, so I do not accept returns.
