Patrick James Eggle 2022 Macon Special w/ 1 Piece Master Grade Redwood Top

The Macon Special is often considered among Eggle aficionados as the perfect balance between aesthetics, playability and tone. Lighter in weight than its carve topped brethren and with the killer combination of a P90 in the neck position and a vintage humbucker in the bridge, the Special can handle everything you can throw at it, and more. Patrick’s attention to detail is unrivalled in the world of lutherie and you wont find so much as a hair out of place on this guitar. If you’re considering purchasing this as your first Eggle, be warned that it’s a tough road back to the big-box brands after witnessing his skills firsthand (I have several Macon’s in my own collection and speak from wallet-stinging experience).

This model has several upgrades from the standard Macon Special, including an utterly gorgeous one-piece Mastergrade flamed redwood top. These redwood tops are in short supply and being hundreds of years old, will likely never be seen again once stock dwindles. The unchambered mahogany body (also one-piece) is perfectly quarter sawn and is finished with a natural stain and lightly tinted lacquer. The neck profile (fat 59) is obviously based on a particularly pleasing vintage Les Paul shape, but in our opinion it is the finest carve available on the market today. The highly figured maple is topped with a rich and dark slab-rosewood board and finished with subtle yet pleasing pearloid marker dots.

Every aspect of this guitar screams perfection and so rarely does an instrument’s tonal qualities match its looks. Specc’ing this out on his website brings you to over £4300 and current wait times are well over 12 months 

How It Sounds

The P90/humbucker combo allows for an incredibly diverse tonal palette. Both pickups are custom specc’d from Mojo Tone, who make some of the finest noise-makers in the world today. The neck P90 is warm, fat and lush and cleans up beautifully with a little volume roll off; offering vintage inspired twang that doesn’t have the inherently muddy nature of a neck position humbucker. The PAF inspired bridge ‘bucker growls with mind-range ferocity and the pot can be pulled up for a direct to output wiring option which bypasses the rest of the tone circuit. This is truly one of the finest sounding and playing guitars that we’ve ever encountered, even when compared to Patrick’s other guitars.
