Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) – 1987 Marshall Silver Jubilee model 2553 JCM 25/50 guitar amplifier, made in England, serial number 04908, small box head and (unique!) silver jubilee tolex custom 1960AV (made in 2007) 4 x 12 cabinet
This amplifier was purchased from the personal collection of Hugh Manson in Exeter, Devon, UK. It was formerly owned by Martin Barre of Jethro Tull and still has the original faint yellow chinagraph pencil marks of Martin’s settings intact. Also, it still has the original clear plastic sticker on the front and back panels. This was one of three similar amps Martin Barre used with Jethro Tull. This was his primary amp and is labelled number 1 by the input. Hugh Manson has a long association with Martin Barre and purchased this from him and used it as his workshop amplifier for many years before selling it on. The cabinet is a unique item made after asking Marshall Amplifiers to build a matching 4 x 12, Marshall obliged and provided the cabinet, a very desirable 1960AV Vintage version, using original Silver Jubilee tolex they had leftover from the first run in 1987. Sold with a signed letter of provenance.
Head Detail One of the most sought after amplifiers from the Marshall line, the one and only Silver Jubilee. This example is the short box 2553 50 / 25 watt head and it sounds incredible. Used by artists such as Martin Barre, Slash, Joe Bonamassa, and John Frusciante the Silver Jubilee has a great track record and insane tone. Overall in good condition less some tolex discoloration and wear. Sounds fantastic and is incredibly versatile. This one does not come with a footswitch.
Cabinet Detail Modelled on the 1960A, the 1960AV shares the same excellent build and aural characteristics. The difference is that the 280 Watt 1960AV is loaded with Celestion G12 Vintage speakers. These speakers have a smoother high-end response, which sounds warmer than the Celestion G12T-75s in the 1960A. The mid range is well defined, providing plenty of chunk without getting too boomy, which lends itself to heavier, more aggressive rock genres. It has been said that the lower-frequency response of the 1960AV has a ‘tuneful’ quality. As described above this is a unique item made with leftover Silver Jubilee tolex at the Marshall factory in 2007.
Sold with necessary power cables and speaker cable.
