Up for sale, a 1984 Tokai Super Edition Eddie Van Halen Tribute "Frankenstrat" in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order Produced in extremely limited quantities exclusively for the Japanese domestic market (and not present in any Tokai catalog), this limited edition Tokai is an ode to the shred pioneer, boasting the aesthetics of the iconic “Frankenstrat,’ loaded with a single bridge position humbucker and a Shift 2001 (Washburn Wonderbar) tremolo system.

Sonically bright and bold, the humbucker meters at 8.2k ohms with ample midrange heft and a tight, cutting low end. The pickup takes heavy drive well for white hot solos and crunchy chords. This Tokai weighs 7lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 9-42 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.

The one-piece maple neck has a moderately chunky C-shaped profile carve, bordering on V-shaped at the nut with modest shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .850” deep at the 1st fret and .925” at the 12th. The fretboard has a 12” radius with dot inlay and flawless medium jumbo fretwire. This Tokai plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1.650" (42mm), forward of the locking nut, ensuring optimal tuning stability with heavy tremolo use. The headstock matches the striped finish on the body, with a Tokai Super Edition decal and chrome-plated Gotoh tuners that turn smoothly. There are also a couple small mounting holes almost covered by the locking nut from a previously removed string retainer.

On the body, the streamlined electronics function as intended, with the bridge position humbucker governed by a single Volume knob. The original potentiometer is dated to January, 1984. The Shift 2001 tremolo system (also known as the Washburn Wonderbar) is widely considered to be one of the best top-mounted tremolos due to its exceptional stability and pitch retention, plus the smoothness and consistency of its actuation thanks to the double roller saddles, spring-less design, and unique break angle. It can deliver both light warbles and huge, EVH-style divebombs without going out of pitch.

Cosmetic wear on the gloss finish includes a handful of minor dings and finish scratches on the body as a whole, largely concentrated along the perimeter and on the back, as well as a pair of small marks on the bass-side body horn. The ambered gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth and fast in the palm, with a small ding on the bass-side shoulder behind fret 2 that has no impact on playability.

A heavily padded gigbag is included.
