Hamer Centablo Diablo / Centaura 1995 Natural
This guitar is a cross between a couple of the mainstays of the 90's Hamer "Superstrat/shredder" lineup. We have what is basically a "Diablo" body shape mated to non-reverse neck that says "Centaura" with its offset position markers on a Pau Ferro fingerboard. To further differentiate this particular example from the "norm" (which with Hamer can be a rather nebulous term to begin with), we also find that the pickups are mounted in rings rather than the usual direct-mount Diablo standard (factory in this case-ask me to tell you how I came to this conclusion if it matters deeply to you).
The size and shape of the neck is also a bit of a shock upon first grasp, being almost identical in feel to my '96 Special FM - this is NOT a thin flat shredder neck!! I would call it "chunky" if not "substantial". Grover tuners too.
Just so it could be totally uniquely my own, I had Josh Gravelin (look him up!) wind a set of "slightly hotterPAF-style" pickups, with an extra helping of grunt and requested clarity for the neck voice. With the mega-5-way doing some sweet splitting in the "in-betweens", this is a superbly versatile guitar. Did I mention bigger neck too??
What isn't so awesome, but never a hindrance to my enjoyment, is the fact that the body has a bunch of small impressions all over it. If you know these catalyzed lacquer finishes found on later Hamers, you know that a fingernail can almost keave a mark, and marks have been left. Not rashy removal of chunks abuse, but a bunch of goofs in the clear. Good news is, it is invisible at 1 meter, the neck was spared any such dinging, and the neck is also nice and meaty. The alder used for the body has a wonderful, consistent grain, as does the pau fingerboard. The neck is one-piece maple and the carve is what I would label "Vintage". One other quirk is the fact that the trem block is too long to allow the cover plate to fit(swapped bridge at some point?) which likely explains the plate being MIA. Bridge is German Schaller and in fine condition. There is minimal to no fretwear and the weight is VERY nice for long sessions. Great stuff, way too cheap but......I gotta. This will ship in a gig bag. Thanks for looking!
