About This Listing

This horn is in great shape, it was overhauled by Steve Collins a few years ago and plays wonderfully. It’s so effortless to play and has a big, warm, and open sound. I’ve owned a handful of SDAs, and this is by far the best one I’ve played. Steve’s overhaul on this horn is among the best I’ve seen. I’ve picked this horn over vintage Selmers, Kings, Bueschers, and Conns.

The lacquer is original and features Buffet’s famous sparkle (crazing) effect under direct light. There is minor cosmetic wear throughout the horn (1 low C leg resoldered, lacquer wear near the top of the body tube, and discoloration around the top stack) but overall I would say the horn is in great condition. The lacquer is a beautiful dark honey color and is 95% intact.

As someone who has owned a few SDAs, I know you can find them cheaper than this. However the price tag on this horn reflects its great condition and playability. At this price, you are getting a fully overhauled horn by a reputable tech. Not all vintage horns age equally, many of the lower priced ones may need work, have poor quality work done to them, or simply may not play as well. Vintage horns are hand made, no two are the same!

Anyone who’s played a good buffet knows that they are some of the best bang for your buck horns out there. Why pay $5k plus for a vintage Selmer when you can get a similar vintage French-made horn with a top overhaul? I’ve sold a handful of Mark VIs and Balanced Actions that didn’t play as great as this horn. This buffet would be an ideal main axe for any professional!

My one gripe with the horn is that the action is slightly noisy, however it is not missing any adjustment material.

Horn comes with the original case in good condition - not the hiscox case pictured.

If you’ve been looking for a vintage pro alto, you could not go wrong with this horn.
