Custom Carvin 5-String Fretless bass. Made in the USA - San Diego, CA. I don't know the exact year but my best guess is mid to late 1990's based on when the LB75 model was available then further limited by the locking Sperzel tuners. Those are pretty rare on bass.
This bass plays & sounds excellent! It's the best-playing fretless I've ever owned & I've owned many over the years. I always need fretlines, so I appreciate finding them on a bass of this quality. Oh, and it has round-wound strings on it. (To all of you wincing reading that... Yeah, I know. I'm with ya.) It still plays smoothly even like that.
Piano-like clarity and sustain from the neck-thru construction and the combination of quality tone-woods & professional, high-quality electronics. It's got a great voice. Pickups are silent & I believe to be stacked humbuckers. The fact that they're silent lends credence to that assertion. The J-bass shaped humbuckers & single-coils looked identical during this era.
It has a minor ding on the beveled edge on the body waist on the control-side. It's shown in the pics but is not very noticeable.
The value to cost ratio on Carvins of this era is AMAZING! If it was a G*bson or F*nder it'd be half the quality and twice the price. PRS and it'd be 4x the price. I wish I was kidding!!
