Up for sale, a 1978 Greco Super Sound vintage S-style guitar in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The predecessor of the Fender Japan JV Strats, the "Super Sound" models were at the very top of Greco's Strat range in '78, made in Japan at the famed Fujigen factory in the years prior to Fujigen Gakki signing their deal with Fender. This particular Super Sound has non-catalog features including a mahogany body and satin nitro lacquer finish.
Tonewoods include a body made from some species of mahogany, a maple neck, and a thick slab rosewood fretboard. This Super Sound has both a natural warmth and crisp treble cut, qualities faithfully translated by the trio of original Maxon-made Excel single coil pickups. These pickups are a close match to their Fender compatriots, with black fiber bobbins and staggered alnico magnets. The bridge is chewy and sparkling, the middle pickup is punchy and full, and the neck position single coil has a round, bell-like quality. This Greco is notably lightweight at 7lbs 1oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a slender soft V-shaped profile carve, measuring .800” deep at the 1st fret and .905” at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard is a dark, tight-grained slab with a 7 1/4” radius, retaining the stock slender fretwire which has well-rounded crowns, showing only a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-7. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The original nut measures 1.650" (42mm) in width. On the headstock, the “Greco Guitar”-stamped tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with even patina across the nickel plating. The four bolt neck plate is embossed with “Made in Japan” text and a D78-prefix serial which dates this guitar to April, 1978.
The electronics all function as intended, with the Maxon Excel pickups wired to the stock harness and governed by a three-way pickup selector switch and standard Volume/Tone/Tone Strat control array. The full-size 250k Japanese pots date to February, 1978. Plastics include the original three-ply parchment pickguard and a trio of knobs, two of which are deeply aged. Hardware includes the jack cup and vibrato unit with block saddles.
The two-tone Sunburst finish is genuine satin nitro lacquer, applied thinly enough so that the pores of the mahogany can be felt through the finish. Cosmetic wear includes buckle rash central to the upper bout on the back, a number of nicks and dings along the perimeter and back of the body, and a handful of light scratches and dings on top as well. The satin finish on the neck profile is practically perfect, feeling smooth and fast in the palm.
