Labradorite is a feldspar mineral first discovered in Labrador, Canada in 1770 by Moravian missionaries who named it after the area. Labradorite features transparent and opaque portions in the same stone, and the colors are typically various shades of white, grey, or black, with occasional hints of other colors such as blue, green, or yellow.
However, what really makes Labradorite special is the distinctive iridescent quality the stone often features. When looked at from different angles the stone will produce flashes of color that change with the viewing angle which can include various shades of blue, green, gold, silver, white, or red. Although similar to what one would see in an abalone shell, the term labradorescence was coined to describe the unique effect.
Since its discovery Labradorite has been valued for its aesthetic qualities as well as its healing and metaphysical properties. People all around the world prize Labradorite for use in jewelry, beads, amulets, rings, and other ornaments. Although originally discovered in Canada, since then deposits have been found in Poland, Scandinavia, Madagascar, Australia, the United States, and other countries around the world. Some subtypes of Labradorite include Spectrolite which is used to describe a type of Labradorite found in Finland, a gold or champagne colored variety called Golden Labradorite, and Rainbow Moonstone for varieties that are generally solid white or lighter in color.
Labradorite is a hard and durable stone, with an approximately 6-6.5 rating on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it a fantastic and long lasting material for use in guitar picks.
