Up for sale, a 1979 Greco Super Sound model SE600J “Jeff Beck” in near mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and bridge cover. The predecessor of the Fender Japan JV Strats, this upper tiered Super Sound model was produced at the Fujigen factory in the years prior to Fujigen Gakki signing their deal with Fender. This particularly rare iteration of the SE600 platform is outfitted with a trio of On/Off/On pickup switches instead of a standard five-way selector switch.
This guitar is an amalgam of early Fender features, with a V-shaped maple neck, slab rosewood fretboard, and Sen ash body. Acoustically, it has a bright, smooth character, faithfully captured by the stock trio of Maxon-made black bobbin PU-119 pickups. The PU-119s deliver plenty of top end sparkle, with shimmer and snap in the bridge position and bell-like clarity at the neck. The trio of On/Off/Phase pickup switches, unique to this particular model in the Greco line, offer access to all conceivable pickup combinations, and any pair of pickups can be set out-of-phase. This Greco weighs 7lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a substantial soft V-shaped profile carve, with modest shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .905” deep at the 1st fret and 1.030” at the 12th. The slab rosewood fretboard is a dark, tight-grained cut, retaining the flawless stock slender fretwire. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The stock bone nut measures 42.5mm in width (just fractionally shy of a full 1 11/16"). On the small early '60s-style headstock, the original Greco Deluxe Kluson-style double line tuning machines are intact and turn smoothly. The G79-prefix serial number on the four-bolt neck plate translates to July of 1979.
On the body, all of the electronics work as intended, with untouched solder joints and full-size Japanese pots. Controls included dedicated On/Off/Phase switches with Master Volume and Tone controls. All of the hardware is exceedingly clean, including the dome-topped knurled knobs, bridge base with block saddles, and the original chrome-plated bridge cover. The one-ply matte black pickguard rounds out the plastics. The gloss White finish is extremely clean, with cosmetic wear limited to a scant few tiny dings on the lower bout and body perimeter. The smooth gloss finish on the neck profile is pristine.
The original black tolex hardshell case with gold plush interior is included and equally as clean as the guitar, retaining its original handle and trio fo functional latches.
