Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Jaguar in excellent condition and in perfect working order. 100% original aside from a body-only refinish in Sherwood Green and one swapped toggle switch, this Jag is everything a vintage Fender Offset guitar should be. Weighing 9lbs 6oz, this Jaguar has a focused attack and great resonance from decades of being lovingly played. Professionally setup and dialed in with 11-50 nickel strings, this Jaguar is an incredibly versatile Fender axe with all the twang, snap and jangle you could ever want!
Tonally, the Jaguar features single coils with alnico magnets that are very similar in output and design to a Stratocaster with the notable addition of the metal claws that focus the field of the magnets and dampen a bit of the usual single coil hum. Matched with 1Meg pots, the Jaguar has a very open tonal quality and a fullness and brash rhythm tone that you simply can't coax out of any other Fender. From spank and snarl in the bridge position to more mellow jangle at the neck, this Jaguar boasts a switch or knob for your every tonal desire. Flip on the rhythm circuit for even more smoothed out, dark tones that help abate the excess treble response of many amps while also providing a lovely voicing for your favorite overdrive and fuzz pedals.
The neck has a medium C profile with generous shoulders that give the profile a substantial yet manageable feel, and the original gloss nitro finish on the maple has been worn down to a smooth, almost satin feel with wear down to the bare maple at the fretboard edges. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard sports aged white binding and pearloid block inlays, with 1966 being the very first year to boast this cosmetic feature. The original frets are intact and play very well, having been leveled and crowned in recent years, currently showing virtually no wear. Neck relief is ideal and the truss rod is responsive in both directions, allowing this Jag to be ideally setup with no buzzing or dead spots. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width and the original nut is intact. The original "Fender Jaguar" waterslide decal is completely intact on the headstock and the original Fender "F" tuning machines are present too, turning smoothly and holding pitch well.
On the body, all of the control plates retail their gleaming chrome finish and provide a nice contrast to the stock nitrate tortoise pickguard that has an incredible amount of deep yellow swirling, and it's uncommon to see a pickguard this vibrant and colorful past the Pre-CBS era. All of the electronics are clean and stock, with CTS pots that date to the 31st week of 1966. The body routes are untouched, with original shielding plates intact, and beneath the "claws" of both pickups, the original gray bobbins each have handwritten dates from late in '66. The pickups read 7.3k ohms in the neck position and 7.95k at the bridge. The vibrato unit is properly calibrated for everything from subtle shimmies to deep bends, jumping back into tune well and responding to the slightest touch with the original arm.
The nitro lacquer Sherwood Green body-only refinish is quite old and has already started to show a bit of faint lacquer checking. There's patina on the bridge saddles, bridge bass, and treble side edge of the mute, while the pickup "claws" are quite clean. The nitrate guard has shrunk a bit over time but not warped or buckled, and there are a few thin cracks at the mounting screws. Despite this, the guard still sits flat and secure to the body. The guitar shows some finish chips on the edges of the vibrato unit and neck plate, as well as pick wear in the pick path, and and a few light nicks and scuffs on the back near the belly contour, but shy of what would typically be considered "buckle rash." There is also one small spot of finish touchup darker than the surrounding Sherwood on the back edge of the body adjacent to the rear strap button. The original neck finish shows fine, horizontal lacquer checking on both sides of the headstock.
This Jaguar is a prime example of Fender's top solidbody model in '66, with an older body-only refinish in Fender's popular Sherwood Green custom color. All of the original electronics and hardware are present, and the neck has a great feel with practically zero fretwear!
The original black tolex hardshell case is included. The small "Fender" logo is no longer present on the case exterior, but the original latches and handle are present.
