2005 Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass PJ Model AJB-58 Dolphin Grey, Japan CIJ

Up for sale, a 2005 Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass model AJB-58 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. A “Crafted in Japan” exclusive model sold within the Japanese domestic market, this Aerodyne is unique both visually and sonically; featuring a PJ pickup configuration, bound body, and gloss Dolphin Gray finish with matching headstock.

While most Fender basses outfitted with the PJ pickup configuration use a Precision-style body, this Aerodyne has the sleek looks and comfortable 1 1/2” nut width of the Jazz Bass. The pickups offer the ample thump and heft of a Precision split-coil neck pickup, and the midrange cut and articulation of a Jazz Bass pickup at the bridge. Tonewoods include a basswood body, maple neck, and thick slab rosewood fretboard. This bass weighs 8lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-105 strings, comfortable action and accurate intonation.

The maple neck has a medium depth U-shaped profile carve with round shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .835” deep at the 1st fret and .960” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a 7 1/4” radius and pristine stock slender fretwire, playing cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The stock bone nut measures 1 1/2” in width. The matching headstock features clover-button tuners that turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, displaying an even dusting of patina on their nickel plating. The “Crafted in Japan” text and R-prefix serial number are present above the four-bolt neck plate.

All of the electronics work as intended, with individual Volume knobs for each pickup and a Master Tone control. All of the chrome-plated hardware is notably clean, including the bridge, control plate, and Strat-style knobs. The gloss Dolphin Gray finish is accented by a multi-ply black pickguard which shows some requisite scuffing on the treble side of the strum path. Cosmetic wear includes a scant few dings on the bass side of the top, similar wear on the lower bout on the back, and a few light scratches on the back central to the waist. The gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth and clean.
