Be sure to check out the video demo we did for this marvelous Custom Built guitar!
The guitar is am OM sized guitar. It measures 15 inches in total lower bout width, its 3 ¼ wide at the the top side measuring 4 inches at the bottom width. It measures 41 inches in total length. It has a 25 ½ inch scale neck, 20 frets, a 14 degree radius on the fretboard and the nut measure 1 11/16 inches. It is, of course, set up with awesome low easy playing action that is an absolute pleasure. The sound is magnificent. Not too bright and not too mellow… It has its own voice and hasn’t even started to open up yet.
Lets discuss the exotic woods Mike used for this beauty…
The top is a hightly figured Bear Clawed Sitka Spruce. Have you ever seen that much Bear Claw in a top before? I certainly haven’t. Opening the case and seeing that top is breathtaking!
The back and sides are made with beautiful Ziricote. Just what is Ziricote? It’s a Central American Hardwood that is dark like Rosewood and very grainy. Heres’s some more information about Ziricote..
Ziricote is one of the most popular, visually striking exotic woods in the world. Renowned for its “landscape” or “spiderweb” grain patterns, its colors range from medium to dark shades of brown (occasionally with either a green or purplish tint), and are accentuated by intermingled bands of unpredictable, irregular black growth rings. Sapwood is easily distinguishable by its dull off-white to pale yellow hue.
Although it is a fairly dense wood, its typical straight (though sometimes slightly interlocked) grains and fine to medium-fine texture give it cooperative working properties, as it cuts, turns, glues and finishes smoothly.
The fretboard, bridge and Headcap are all made with Gabon Ebony… This wood is priced at 3 times the price of Rosewood and it is worth it. Beautiful very hard wood from Africa. Here’s some more information regarding Gabon Ebony…
Gabon Ebony, also known as “Gaboon” or “Black” Ebony sets the undisputed standard for true black wood around the globe and has done so throughout history. Highly prized throughout many civilizations as the purest of all black wood, it has been found in the most coveted places within Egyptian tombs. Other documented fondness by royalty shows it to have been the choice material for scepters and drinking cups by the ancient kings of India.
Today’s artisan craftsmen continue to hold Gabon Ebony in the highest esteem due to the associated lore, as well as the workable traits of the material itself. Due to the extreme tight grain density, it is capable of polishing to a glass like finish, and can provide a genuine black color with almost no visible grain whatsoever. Most often is straight grained but infrequently might have some interlocked grain.
From a musical instrument perspective, it has proven itself time and again to be of the finest material to work with, and is known for superior tonality due to the higher density over the other types of ebony. It has a long history as being used for piano keys, as well as bodies for clarinets and other woodwind instruments. Also, with luthiers it is prized for fingerboards, bridges and headplates in quality guitar building. Size limitations of available stock prevent it from being widely used for the guitar body itself, but there are some out there.
The neck is made of Mahogany, the nut and saddle are both hand carved bone. Mike made the Flame Maple Body bindings as well as the Three Ring Rosette around the sound hole. He also inlaid the fretboard with the Mother of Pearl Floral 12th fret inlay, truss rod cover, Marcovis Headstock Logo, and even the inlays in the bridge pins and end pin. What a work of art by this highly skilled Luthier.
I can’t say enough about the beauty and sound of this incredible instrument. Whoever becomes the ultimate owner will certainly love this beautiful hand made instrument!
It comes, of course, in an incredible Hard Shell Case. Made by Ameritage, its is the ultimate protection for this instrument. It is cradled in complete support from the top, neck and bottom to insure your cool guitar will ride in comfort and safety.
