Nice clean example of an early 1960s Airline tube amp. Manufactured by Valco, this is the same amp as the original Supro 1688TN and 88T Bass Amp, as well as the Gretsch 6159 Dual Bass. Has three separate inputs, which can be bridged for additional gain. Comes with original Jensen speakers. It’s got a really nice tremolo. At 9-11 o’clock, it’s got a sweet thick clean tone. At noon it picks up some nice fuzz and drive, and at 3 o’clock and above you’re in classic Zeppelin I+II territory, without blowing out the windows.
Powered by two 6L6GC tubes, it’s meant to generate about 35 watts, but plays more like a 15-18 watter. The volume varies considerably with the power tubes used. I found it with Fender-branded Groove Tubes, tried a set of TungSol and ultimately equipped it with a matched set of Mesa STR430s. They sound clearest and loudest, and give the best tone when really driving the amp.
Amp has what may be the original rectifier tube, a made-in-Canada, Raytheon-branded 5U4GB.
Preamp tubes are as follows:
V1: Fender-branded 12ax7
V2: EHX Russian 12ax7
V3: Sovtek 12ax7WC
V4: Tung-Sol 12ax7
Amp has been thoroughly cleaned and all electrical connections and pots have been treated with Deoxit. The original plastic handle is missing. It’s been replaced with a new universal leather handle. The original faux-pigskin Tolex is in fairly good condition. There are imperfections and tears typical of a 55-year-old amp. The upper-left front corner has lost a thin sliver of wood. There’s a dime sized fraying of the grill cloth just below the Valco “V” emblem.
Local pickup in East Hampton or Brooklyn NY. Will deliver from Manhattan to Montauk for a fee.
