1974 Greco EG650N Vintage Guitar, Mahogany w/ Maple Board & Maxon U-1000 Humbuckers, Japan Fujigen

Up for sale, a 1974 Greco model EG650N in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Both visually and sonically unique, this rare “lawsuit era” LP-style instrument was built at the famed Fujigen factory in Japan, featuring a mahogany body, maple neck and bound maple fingerboard with black block inlay.

The tonewoods ensure both warmth and articulation, with the smooth growl of mahogany and inherent treble attack and detail of maple. The zebra bobbin Maxon-made U-1000 humbuckers offer a complex, harmonic-rich upper-midrange, with plenty of treble cut and sweetness in the bridge position, and a thicker, punchy sound at the neck. The guitar weighs 8lbs 3oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.

The maple neck has a chunky, '50s-style C-shaped profile carve with ample shoulder in every register, measuring .890” at the 1st fret and .970” at the 12th. The bound maple fretboard, uncommon on LP-style guitars, features black block inlay, retaining the flawless stock slender fretwire. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4” scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The original bone nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock is framed by multi-ply binding and sports the iconic “open book” shape with the pre-1976 infamously illegible “Gneco” logo inlay. The star tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with bright chrome plating and metal tulip buttons.

On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints, full-size Japanese pots and green chicklet tone capacitors. The pickups retain their Maxon foil stickers on the baseplates, with ink stamps that date to '74. Hardware includes the original chrome-plated Tune-o-matic bridge and corresponding stopbar, and plastics comprise the original quartet of witch hat knobs, as well as the stock pickup rings and switch surround.

The gloss Walnut finish is framed on top by multi-ply black binding, and cosmetic wear is limited to some clustered finish scratches central to the waist that fall short of "buckle rash," and a handful of dings along the lower bout body edge. The gloss finish on the neck profile is clean and smooth.
