Soprano Ukulele, c. 1930, probably German, natural top, faux grained back and sides finish, maple back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard. This dainty little ukulele bears no markings but matches the look and construction of those sold in Europe in the late 20s and 30's, mostly sourced from Germany or Czechoslovakia. It is built much like a small guitar from these makers, including a spruce top, scarff joint headstock and dramatic faux graining on the back and sides. The top is bound in rosewood, with a simple soundhole ring. The neck is very slim for a uke, feeling more like a mandolin profile as European makers were more familiar with. This is a well-made instrument, built somewhat heavier than it needed to be but a good player with a sweet if not particularly fulsome sound.Overall length is 20 3/8 in. (51.8 cm.), 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/8 in. (5.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 in. (330 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/16 in. (30 mm.). This uke shows a lot of use but is completely solid and plays very well. The all-original finish has wear everywhere with dings, dents and scrapes abounding and quite a bit of strumwear through the finish on top. There are repaired cracks on the top and back and the bridge was replaced long ago. The nicely carved violin pegs are original. This early Euro-uke is an interesting curio that remains a quite usable instrument. Very Good + Condition.
