Up for sale is this PAF–spec patent number sticker hum bucker pickup.

The Oversimplified history of the PAF is as follows. The “patent applied for” sticker pickups were introduced around 1956. They will be used in Gibson guitars until the early 1960s. Once in a blue moon you’ll find them installed in guitars farther into the decade, but around 62 is the general cut off point.

After that they introduced the “patent number sticker“ pick ups. The first version of these was exactly the same as the previous patent applied for pickups except for the sticker. There are very minor changes slowly introduced over the months, including the switch from purple to copper colored wire. Less significant is the switch from a double black to a black and white colored lead wire.

Essentially these give you PAF tone at a cheaper price.

Later you will see the introduction of the “T-top.“. They were first introduced around 1965 or so. They get their name from the “T“ markings on the Bobbins. They still have the “patent number sticker“ but are a bit different. early T tops with stickers have Phillips base plate screws, while the later ones starting in about 1969 have flat head base plate screws.

In the early 1970s you will still see the T-top Bobbins, but the base plate no longer has a sticker. Instead it has the patent number stamped/etched onto the metal itself.

This one has the purple wire. Non-T top bobbins. So it would come from the early/mid-1960s.
