I've searched the world (wide web) over and haven't found a '62-'63 National 85 Map Bass this clean AND with the original hard shell case! This one was definitely a closet queen. Everything works well and sounds great.
For those who are unfamiliar with this unique instrument, it's a short-scale bass, made with a fiberglass body. It has one pickup in the neck position and the wooden bridge is also wired as a pickup. These basses were made in Chicago during 1962 and 1963; in 1964 the body style changed. You'll notice that the headstock is bright white, while the rest has aged to a nice cream color. This is due to the company's odd choice to cover the headstock with a formica-like material that apparently holds it's color very well over time.
