Phenomenal instrument with rich caramel tones. It has rarely been out of the house and has no wear other than the original relic finish. It was purchased from Wildwood Guitars in February 2021. Here are notes from the original listing:
Jason Smith is the only Masterbuilder at the Fender Custom Shop that primarily plays bass. So, we asked him what he would do if he were to build the ultimate Custom Shop player's four-string. Using Jason's personal bass and impeccable taste as a guide, we set out on a quest to achieve low-end perfection.
Can We Borrow Your Pickups, Jason? To craft the perfect sonic cocktail, we borrowed the pickup design almost exactly from Jason's number one bass. He has a certain magic formula that enchanted us, and we couldn't resist the spell of his favorite P/J set. SO we asked if we could base our Wildwood 10 pickups on them, and Fender said yes!
The P pickup sounds just right. It has warm, deep low-end, muscular midrange, and touch-sensitive trebles that can sound round and smooth or snappy and snarly depending on your right-hand intensity. The J pickup is also a delight. It's definitely more focused, but it has satisfying weight and girth. The midrange bites, the lows are tight but muscular, and the highs can clang and clank with the best of 'em. To top it off, there's a super-sweet mod: a push-pull knob that bypasses the tone control for hot, raw, unadulterated sound.
Like Greased Lightning The Hot Rod Bass also feels glorious in your hands. It has a '60 Jazz Bass U-shaped neck profile with a 1.5" nut width, narrow-tall 6105 frets, and our Wildwood-exclusive 10" radius. It all adds up to a neck that plays quite effortlessly. The profile is slim by the nut for effortless low notes and chunky up near the twelfth fret so you have something to grab onto for those fast fills. Also, the taller frets allow you to be more economical with your left hand, and the flatter radius gives it a modern feel.
A Fearsome Four-String All in all, we believe that the folks at the Fender Custom Shop have helped us create one of the most thunderous Wildwood 10s of all time. We're confident that this Hot Rod's combination of effortless modern playability and vintage Fender mojo. Once you take it for a spin, we're sure you'll want to keep the pedal to metal for a long time.
