Worlds of Music is doing a MOVING SALE!!! Oh yes, big price reductions on all kinds of instruments and accessories. Super low moving sale prices good through August 1st!
Very rare to find outside of Morocco, this is a ghaita (pronounced ga-eeta with a growl on the g). It is a very loud folk oboe instrument that is played by different kinds of traditional ensembles all over Morocco.
Way up in the Atlas mountains is a place called Joujouka, and the musicians there are extremely fond of the ghaita. They believe it has special healing, trance inducing powers.
The instruments are made of olive wood, and turned on simple ancient foot driven lathes by skilled initiated craftsmen, then profusely oiled and played in. The wood gets darker with age. The master musicians ghaita are almost completely black! As you can see, this ghaita is rather new.
The main body is fitted with a special receiver that holds the staple, the conical metal tube that the double reed attaches to. The reeds are tricky to work with for the amateur, but with a little practice at tying the reeds on, and getting the right opening, tightness of the thread, etc. the ghaita can be a lot of fun to play.
The ghaita comes with a few extra reeds. Worlds of Music will not accept a return based on not being able to master the processes/operation of the reed. It is a primitive virtuoso instrument, and therefore will necessarily have a somewhat challenging learning curve to experience before one can really have ample playability. VERY VERY best of luck and wisdom to you upon purchasing this unique instrument and beginning work on making the reed work (and be durable) for you.
