BUTTERFLY / Andean Moon Charangon (larger than Charango / smaller than Ronroco)
Professional jarca wood electric Charangon made by the recognized luthier Pedro Quispe Torrez
Retail: 759.00 (Custom-built Aluminum Hard-case included)
I am selling my electric Bolivian Charangon, hand-built by Carlos and Pedro Quispe Torrez in El Alto, Bolivia.
For those unfamiliar with Charangon, its often called “the Mandolin of the Andes” and (typically) has 10 strings in 5 pairs, tuned g’ g’ - c’’ c’’ - e’ e’’ - a’ a’ - e’’ e’’, the highest pair being the same notes as the highest strings on a Mandolin.
I was exposed to the Charangon through one of my Shaman/Teachers. His was custom-built with 13 strings.
Through a Broker/Translator I had Pedro build this custom Charangon similar to my Teacher's.
Custom Charangon:
String Notes, Configuration and Gauges:
Note D G B E B
Strings 2 3 3 2 3
Gauge .012 .010 .018 / .007 .010 .007
NOTE: I often am lazy and just buy the standard "10-string" set of strings and they install / sound great as well as the custom "D" tuning I built this for.
NOTE: The strings currently on this instrument is the standard "10-string" set.
Search YouTube for Charango / Charangon demos to hear what this Mandolin-like instrument sounds like.
The Folklore:
There are many stories of how the charango came to be made. One story says that the native musicians liked the sound the vihuela (an ancestor of the Classical Guitar) made, but lacked the technology to shape the wood in that manner. Another story says that the Spaniards prohibited natives from practicing their ancestral music, and that the charango was a (successful) attempt to make a lute that could be easily hidden under a garment. It is believed the charango originated in the 18th century Andes somewhere in modern-day Potosí Bolivia, probably from Amerindian contact with Spanish settlers.

Finger board: Ebony
Type of wood: Jarca
