Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome.
You are looking at a very attractive Shure Brother's 737A microphone produced during the 1940's through the 1960's. This particular model was a late 2nd generation generation 1960's era model nicknamed "The Waffle Iron" for obvious reasons. It comes with the period Atlas DS-7 desk stand shown in which to display.
Pic # 2 is from an old Shure catalog I have showing the mics basic specs. I do believe this is one of the fist 737A mics made as the label is different from any other model I have seen with the stamp being on the right side of the badge instead of the left. Very unique indeed.
Shure made several crystal microphones over the decades starting in the late 1920's but the crystal models were eventually phased out as the dynamic and ribbon mics were superior in sound. The 737A was one of the very last models sold that incorporated this technology and the 737A had a uni-directional type. I believe the last year this model was sold was 1967 or 1968.
It should be noted that this mic has been tested and is currently non-working. The crystal board assembly is present inside of the mics housing but the actual crystal element is gone. This should be used as a display, prop or repair piece only.
As you can see the satin chrome finish has extremely lite cosmetic wear associated for a 737A of this age and they rarely come any nicer as seen in the pics provided. This specimen has an amazing luster to it as well. Let the pics be your guide. The front, side and rear black silk screens have no rips or holes or discoloration. The grills have zero dents or fractures. The Shure badge looks beautiful being completely legible. The joint mechanism works perfectly. The threads for the stand and cable as good as they get. This is a very nice example overall and I'd rate this a 9 on a scale of 1 - 10.
The mic is solid with no loose pieces inside or out. These mics are notorious for having a loose element boards inside. I fix this problem so that nothing rattles around by replacing the foam mounts with new ones. This will make a nice display piece for any collector of vintage mics in the home, office or studio.
MICROPHONE STAND IS PART OF THIS SALE...
The stand is from the 1960's era and perfect for just about any older vintage microphone. The design and paint scheme shows that it's clearly a 1960's / 70's DS-7 retractable desk stand made in Parssipany, NJ. The DS-7 had a heavier cast iron base with a 2 piece chrome riser assembly to give the user a better range of height adjustment to work with.
The stand is in very nice physical and operating condition. There is no discoloration or paint chips on the satin black paint. Just lite scratches. The two chrome risers have just lite scratches and the clutch mechanism works perfectly. The original Atlas sticker is gone however. The stand has 3 new cork pads as the original pads were missing.
You'll notice there is a small toggle switch that was installed decades ago to give any mic an on / off option but the toggle switch is not wired currently.
The total height with the mic and stand lowered completely is 15 inches tall. Raised completely it's 20 inches. Width of stand is appx 6 inches and the weight is roughly 3 pounds. It's a beautiful combo and will looks great anywhere it's displayed.
