For sale is a 48 channel Neve VR, serial A12072. Originally sold to the Grateful Dead in 1990 and installed at their warehouse facility in Sausalito until 2006. As the Dead are known audiophiles, the desk was meticulously maintained. The Dead also had John Musgrave of Mad-Labs (Conway studios) do a number of mods to the desk, including the buss bar mod that lowers the noise floor considerably and Musgrave’s modified center section card, which dramatically opens the sound of the desk. A Sony digital meter was added and installed on the meter bridge. They also had a custom headphone amplifier built for Jerry  that is below the center section next to the “wild/group” faders.

I purchased the desk in 2007 and it is in use at my studio in Minneapolis, potential buyers are welcome to set up a time for a tech report or to view the desk.

Cosmetically, the desk would rate 8, it is in very good condition. The console is used everyday, either for mixing or tracking duties. You can use the console as is and it sounds great, but there are multiple channel faults and the desk would be well served by having these fixed. The console comes with an amazing set of spares, from the original Neve toolbox with hundreds of components (pots, switches, caps, screws, etc), spare cards, and 5 full channel spares. Since I’ve owned it, the console has been bathed in cold air from a 3 ton AC unit, as such the console does not need a global recap.

The Neve/Martinsound Flying fader system is operational. Full documentation and software is included. In addition, a spare computer, and 3 spare hard drives come with the sale.

This is a great opportunity to own a Neve VR with great provenance. The VR sells studio time. This console is a complete set which is rare these days, we have everything that came with the desk when it was sold new. There’s lots of life left in this desk.
