USED USA G&L ASAT Deluxe II Savannah Collection OHSC.... The G&L Savannah Collection was a limited 2012/2013 build of just 250 guitars of each style. Featuring semi hollow Okoume body with a Korina top and the formal introduction of their "old school" Tobacco Sunburst finish, the Savannah collection guitars are responsive, beautiful, and rare.

This guitar is in excellent condition and due to a broken truss rod received a new neck from G&L in May 2022 (see last photo). No other visible signs of wear other than light scuffing on the pickguard and small amounts of pickup cover tarnish.

So what is Okoume? It's an African hardwood that is fairly lightweight, has a grain similar to mahogany, and is popular as an laminate in lightweight decorative plywood for boats or structural plywoods for aircraft. When used on acoustic guitars, it is said to have tonal properties similar to maple.

It is light, and this guitar weighs in at 6.8 pounds, which is downright svelte. The "old school" Tobacco sunburst finish is also super-sexy, and has a nice reddish brown fade instead of the usual black. The brown background allows more of the grain to show through, and since you paid for it, you might as well get to see it.

The Deluxe II configuration of humbuckers with Tone Pros bridge and tailpiece is a very appealing platform. The bridge and tailpiece is a little more lively and resonant than the G&L saddle lock bridge, and combined with the semi-hollow construction produces a clean and airy overall tone. This is not a dark and wooly humbucker guitar, and if you are typically a single coil player the transition is an easy one to make.

The combination of Seymour Duncan '59 neck and JB bridge pickups is the same as in any G&L ASAT Deluxe from this era. While the choice may seem not particularly inspired, the combination of pickups, wood, finish and neck result in a very pleasing and versatile instrument. The '59 has a clean high end that is nicely defined and not too overly midrange heavy; while the bass notes are percussive and have a touch of "boing" much like a single coil. Comparatively speaking, the top end is like the Seth Lover pickup in the Bluesboy, but the low end is firmer with more punch.

The JB bridge pickup is appropriately hotter, but the semi-hollow construction tempers the midrange and removes and nasal peaks that often occurs with high output humbuckers. It's more than acceptable for clean jangly tones that are crisp and swirly, but there is also plenty of meat on the bones to drive your favorite pedal or gain channel. Although the JB the pickup is voiced for higher gain settings, with the Savannah there is enough character and tone that you could solo on the bridge pickup totally clean. And while the chambered body does reduce the low end a bit, the overall response of the guitar is more balanced and less peaky.

While any of the G&L Custom Creations are interesting guitars, the Savannah Collection really pegs the "cool" meter. The light weight is a benefit for performing musicians, and the tonality of semi-hollow construction is dimensionally complex without the worries of acoustic feedback. With only 250 made, this is a rare opportunity to grab one.
