About This Listing

Excellent cosmetic and working condition vintage 1960’s Ampex 510 Stereo microphone pair.  The mics come with the stand shown in the photo and it has a 12 foot cable with a standard 1/4” TRS plug. The mics have been tested and are providing nice, clear output. Each mic tests at approximately 500 ohms impedance on my multimeter. The balanced stereo 1/4" TRS connector will allow for separate left and right channels to be used when connected to a multi-channel capable device for recording. The mics measure approximately 6 inches wide and 6 inches high on the stand. This microphone set was likely included in one of the high end tape recorders Ampex offered during this era, and were made for Ampex by the Philips company in Holland.
A little history:
Ampex was an innovative American company founded in the 1940’s in Hayward, California. Their first great success was a line of reel-to-reel tape recorders developed from the German wartime Magnetophon system at the behest of Bing Crosby. Ampex quickly became a leader in audio tape technology, developing many of the analog recording formats for both music and movies that remained in use into the 1990s. Starting in the 1950s, the company began developing video tape recorders, and later introduced the helical scan concept that make home video players possible. They also introduced multi-track recording, slow-motion and instant playback television, and a host of other advances. Ampex's tape business was rendered obsolete during the 1990s, and the company then turned to digital storage products.

These mics are a very nice find and will look great in your studio, office or “cave” even if they are not being put to use!
