1981 Serial Number, late 1980 Potentiometer Codes.
In the middle of 1980, after the success of Gibson’s famous “Silverburst” Custom Color, the company decided to issue several other custom colors. Goldburst, Pewter (gray) and Candy Apple Red. The Goldburst and Candy Apple Red guitars both featured a gold base coat to which the Candy Apple Red, in this case, was applied. The very first run of these guitars, after the finished cured, were prone to severe “orange peeling” in the finish. This guitar is a perfect example of that. Many customers that purchased these guitars new sent their guitars back to the factory to get refinished. Black in most cases. The original owner of this instrument decided they did not have an issue with the finish and continued to play the guitar for the last 40 years. If you look closely at the picture of the neck where there are a few chips, you will notice a greenish base coat color. The green you are seeing is in fact a gold base coat.
At first glance the orange peeling may lead you to believe the guitar is refinished. A little research online will substantiate the explanation above.
