This is a Vintage 1960's Shure 546 Microphone that works and performs perfectly.

As the photos show, it is in near mint condition.  It literally looks as though it's only been plugged in a few times in its life, not to mention that is looks like a piece of Art!

Please note that here is also a removable impedance switch plate (see Photo 6), which when removed, allows you to easily change the impedance from 50 to 150 ohms (see below for actual ohms) by turning a switch.

A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON AND MY IMPRESSIONS

The Shure Model 546 Unidyne lll was the incredible sounding predecessor to the SM-57, one of the most popular microphones of all time.

From CCR to Hendrix to the Stones, the 546 is the mic that revolutionized how drums and guitar amps were recorded and how they’d sound on countless hit records for generations to come.

Unlike the 57, the model 546 features a specially selected linear response Unidyne lll capsule with a copper voice coil.  It also features an internal  switch that allows you to select between 38 ohms "L" (70 ohms actual) and 150 ohms "H" (300 ohms actual) impedance, permitting it to be used with any vintage or modern preamp.

Another unique feature is the built-in shock mount, which permits using the mic at a 90-degree angle, making it much easier to position.

So, how does it sound? Well, as one of my engineers friends said that it “sounds like a 57 on steroids!”.  I couldn't have said it better myself.

Compare it to your trusty 57 and prepare to be amazed!

The Shure 546 is a very close cousin to the 545 Paul Butterfield mic. But it is better and much scarcer. It has a cool looking and effective shock mount, and it sports a more high end element, the R-46 versus the R-45.

Shure said it was ideal for professional entertainers.... No need to go on a quest for an oddball cable for this one. It uses a standard XLR and even that is included. Regardless if you are a harp player, vocalist, studio, or collector, this would be a great mic to own.

The 546 was marketed by Shure to be the "Pro" version of the 545 series, with a selected 545 capsule, and an  internal shockmount.

FYI, a Shure 546 was used on many Frank Sinatra recordings at Reprise!

This microphone listed for $142 in 1968, which adjusted for inflation would be over $950 in 2015 dollars.  For comparison the 545 listed for $89 in 1968.  (Source:  the 1968 Shure microphones catalog).

NUFF SAID :)
