This is a great intermediate level banjo to add to your collection at a good price, sounds cool and is easy to play. When I purchased this it was recently restored and presummed to be a 1910's Lange made instrument, but there are no marking to destinguish that as I can see.
The spun-over open back pot makes this a really, really light banjo. The short scaled 17-fret neck allows for a mandolin player to easily play without much adjustment. In fact, I have this set up GDAE tuning (Irish tenor/ octave mandolin tuning) and play most fiddle tunes as I normally would. The V-shaped neck is also nice and comfortable; I wish I could put it on my other tenor instruments. It's not the loudest, but has a good tone and just fun to play. This would make a great road trip, camping and festival banjo.
I replaced the head and flesh hoop purchased from Smakula. Friction tuners are new (Grover, I think) but still need to be tightened often or replaced with geared for best performance. Has a new 5/8" bridge. The neck has a slight sidways pitch but does't seem to create buzzing or any issues. The neck is otherwise straight. Frets are good with minimal wear. The tail piece has a slight flaw that would prevent using ball end on the 4th string, but loop end is what banjo sets come with. This axe shows a lot of vintage petina but has many more years of playing left in it.
Does not come with a case but I will pack very carefully. Thanks for looking. Let me know if you have questions..
