Danelectro Silvertone Model 1300 Model Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1958), Neptune, NJ, serial # 138. This is an interesting and relatively early example of one of the classic "down-market" American guitars of the 1950s, the Silvertone models that Sears sourced from Danelectro in New Jersey. There are a number of models that fall into this category, mostly variations on a theme. This is an unusual transitional example built on the earlier smaller "peanut" body in use from 1955 with the later finish and layout of the subsequent larger-bodied models. The stamped production number seems to indicate fabrication in early 1958, confirmed by a visible pot date to the 4th week of that year. The typical Danelectro features include a bronze lacquer finish on the poplar neck and Masonite-and-pine body with white vinyl edging. The single Danalectro "lipstick" pickup is mated to a two knob setup using a 3-way tone switch tone that actually affords quite versatile sounds out of a one-pickup guitar. While these Silvertones were made to a price, they are surprisingly great sounding and very functional guitars, a testament to Nathan Daniels' endless creativity. This particular one is a variation we have not seen before, and a very well-preserved one at that.Overall length is 37 5/8 in. (95.6 cm.), 11 5/8 in. (29.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/8 in. (3.5 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). This is a very clean and all original guitar, showing some light finish wear overall but not appearing too heavily used sings the 1950s. The face is quite clean except for one deep ding on the lower edge near the waist and a small scratch near the bridge. The back has some dings and dents and a spot of deeper scuffing, while the back of the neck has typical wear to the bronze finish, which is applied OVER the sealer coat and so tarnishes very easily. The white vinyl edging is quite clean for its age. All hardware is original and works as intended, including the nifty 3-way tone switch. The neck is nice and straight and the original frets have been neatly polished out resulting in a fine playing example of this slightly oddball but very endearing Danno creation. It resides in a 1970s era alligator chipboard case with an amusing graphic of an alligator with a handle on the lid. Excellent Condition.
