This vintage 1998 Martin D1 has been completely restored to factory specs with a new Falls NY tight grained Spruce gloss nitro lacquer top (Scalloped X-bracing patterned after a 1930s Martin HD28), HD28 style rosette, Rosewood bridge, tortoise pickguard, bone saddle, with 6 matching black pins and end pin. The rest of the guitar is original, featuring Honduran Mahogany back with Honduran Mahogany sides, original Martin tuners and tortoise binding. There’s some lacquer checking on the top and sides which gives it a cool vintage look. It has also been given a neck reset (2022) so this guitar has spot on action and is ready for many more years of playing. The frets have been also given a polish and dress and the guitar is set up with new Martin Light Studio Performer strings for a bright and focused tone with great projection. All of the work was performed by a master luthier at Custom Pearl Inlay (NY) in 2022. This guitar sounds incredible and is ready for its new owner. All frets are polished and the rosewood fretboard was cleaned and conditioned. Ships in the vintage Martin hard case shown with a black 100% cotton Martin XL T-shirt included.

This guitar was made 23 years ago so it has its share of players wear: a few various dings and surface scratches that do not effect sound or playability. It has some lacquer checking in the top and sides, and a 10” very thin hairline crack on the back that is easily repairable. There is a small repair on the heel of the neck from a previous strap button (shown). This has been professionally repaired and finished over in nitro lacquer by CPI.

The sound is booming and resonates like a D18. The tonal spectrum of this Martin is impressive: very warm and focused, with plenty of power for bluegrass yet warm enough for finger picking. These earlier Martin D-1's had a slightly different bracing pattern and higher quality Mahogany necks, resulting in fantastic tone, with a mellow and deep sound. It is a solid guitar with the classic Martin sound, with aged woods giving it the desired tone many players long for in a vintage Martin, without paying several thousand dollars.
