In 2007 I bought this guitar online from Musician’s Friend and immediately had a local luthier do a professional setup. When I got the guitar back from the luthier, I was so impressed by the instrument’s beauty that I decided not to play it, for fear of scratching and dinging it up. So I put the guitar back in its hardshell case, where it has been stored since then. Now that I am retired and living on a fixed income, I want to sell this guitar and a few others that I bought back in 2007-2008 but never played, or played only very slightly.

When it was introduced in 2003, the Gibson Les Paul Supreme Guitar was the highest-end Les Paul model in Gibson’s lineup. It featured several distinctive features that set it apart from other models both in beauty and in sound quality. Other than a commemorative version that was released in 2019, the last Gibson Les Paul Supreme was produced in 2013.

Both the top and back of the Gibson Les Paul Supreme guitar are carved AAAA maple. In addition to being carved and figured, the back of the Supreme is unique in that there is no control cavity cover or switchplate present. Access to internal electronics is via an opening beneath the large gold cable input jack plate on the side of the guitar. Gibson engineers created this configuration to keep the figured back free of visually intrusive covers or plates. The neck is mahogany, with an ebony fretboard that is inlaid with deluxe pearl split blocks. The top and back of this guitar are glossy cherry sunburst with stunning figuring. Hardware and frets are gold. The pickups are 490R (neck) and 498T (bridge) alnico magnet humbuckers. Emblems on the headstock are an abalone globe and pearloid “Supreme” banner in addition to the “Gibson” name. The chambered mahogany body was designed to reduce weight and enhance resonance. Custom binding surrounds the top (7-ply), back (3-ply), fretboard (single-ply), and headstock (5-ply). Other features include Grover keystone tuners, a tune-o-matic bridge, a stopbar tailpiece, and gold speed knobs. Controls include 2 volume knobs, 2 tone knobs, and a 3-way pickup switch. This guitar is completely original, with no modifications.

Although this instrument is in excellent condition, it has several minor imperfections. On the front of the headstock, the edges of the emblems for “Gibson” and the “Supreme” banner and globe show some effects of aging (see photo of upper half of front of headstock). Mild finish checking has occurred in 2 small patches on the guitar top (these patches are circled on a photo). This finish checking is very difficult to see unless you look closely and the light is reflected from a certain angle. In 4 locations along the edge of the top where the top abuts the binding, the finish is beginning to crack (these locations are circled in photos). The longest of these finish imperfections is about 1 centimeter long and the shortest is about 1 millimeter long. There is a small scuff or scratched spot, about 2mm x 3mm in size, on the side of the body near the tip of the horn (circled in a photo). A tiny partial gap in the binding is present at the joint where the 2 ends of the binding surrounding the back of the body are joined (circled in a photo).

The guitar will be shipped to its new owner in its original Gibson hardshell case, which will be packed inside the original Gibson cardboard shipping box. The hardshell case is in excellent condition. Its only imperfection is that the little leather tab that is normally pulled to lift the lid of the small storage compartment inside the case is no longer attached to the lid. The hardshell case that Gibson provided with the Supreme guitar model has a few enhanced features that are not present in the cases provided with other Les Paul models. For example, the case’s interior is lined with a white crushed-velvet-like material, the case handle is thickly padded and has sturdy metal attachment rings, and 3 cloth straps help support the lid when it is raised.
