OktavaMod / Michael Joly Modded MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone

This is an MXL R144 Ribbon Mic that was specially modded by Michael Joly Engineering aka OktavaMod (look up the website for a full detailed description). I've used it in my smoke-free home studio for the last three years and can say it's been a fantastic sounding true workhorse ribbon microphone. It is especially great on drum overheads and guitars, though it can be used for vocals, horns and any other sound.

The mic is priced so you are basically paying for the mods and getting a free mic. Also included is a second shock mount that I bought separately at no additional cost.

It doesn't change the authenticity of the mic and the mods done to it, it just means I won't be able to send it along with the mic should you purchase it. First, a general description of the mic: Incorporating a Figure-8 polar pattern and a 1.8-micron aluminum ribbon, the MXL R144 offers breathtaking sound for vocal and instrument recordings and is an excellent microphone for broadcast applications. The R144 also performs brilliantly on acoustic instruments, strings, and horns and offers high SPL capability, outstanding side rejection and precise directivity.

Secondly, a description of the special mods: This OktavaMod upgrade to the MXL R144 converts the headbasket to a more open-sounding single layer grille and adds damping to the body to tame acoustical resonances. The OktavaMod Premium modification swaps in a custom designed, made in America transformer for better time and frequency domain performance across the audio spectrum. The OktavaMod Premium modification also upgrades the ribbon to a more sensitive 1.8 micron aluminum and set for proper tension to completely avoid ribbon sag. These modifications produce a great-sounding mic for drum overhead, guitar cabinet, piano or vocal use.
