Martin D 28. SN 187477 made on Jan. 9, 1963. It is in Very Good condition and has recently been repaired and had a neck-off reset and re-fret by David Musselwhite (former Martin luthier), in Jonestown PA. The back and sides are of Brazillian Rosewood and the top, according to Fred Oster, Luthier of Philadelphia, is made of "German" spruce which was rarely used and of very good quality. This is an educated opinion by one of the most respected purveyors of fine vintage instruments in the U.S. but cannot be verified. The back has a few belt buckle scratches in the middle of the back, just above the center line. It also has an older, repaired crack at the bottom of the bout just below center-line, but is in otherwise good condition. The top has expected surface, "pick scratching" above the sound hole and below the bottom of the pickguard as can be expected, given it's age. The neck and fretboard are in very good condition and the action is factory-perfect. The guitar comes with the original hard shell plush-lined case. Included is paperwork from recent and also Martin factory service from 2006. The tone is typical for it's make and period perhaps favoring the treble side of the tonal spectrum, but with more than adequate bass and volume. Currently the base is a bit hollower and richer than normal as it is tuned down a step. I have several guitars, so I do this to save undue stress when they are not being used. There will be no problem with tuning the guitar up to concert pitch.
