Holiday/Harmony
Silhouette/Bobcat model H15V c.a. 1967
Holiday was a
brand name used by the Aldens mail order catalog company (Chicago)to market Harmony
built guitars. This Silhouette/Bobcat is in a redburst finish with a few scuffs
and small chips around the edges. The hardware is bright with no pitting. The pickguard
has a shrinkage crack at one of the screw holes. The knobs are original but the
strap buttons are replacements. The neck is straight and plays very nicely with no
fret out, frets are in good shape with lots of life left. I added a bit of paper under the low E string at the nut when I changed the strings because it had a slight buzz when played open, no buzz when fretted. The tuners are a bit tight which I think is due to the tuner ferrules
choking the posts. I used a string winder to gain extra leverage when I changed
the strings. Removing the tuners and lubricating the posts will likely address
this issue. I don’t think the problem is the tuner gears since the tuner
missing the ferrule turns fine. At least the tuners hold tune well. The main
attraction of this little beauty is the DeArmond pickups. They still have
strong output and fantastic tone. Call the tones what you want (spank, twank,
etc), but the pickups have a sensitive and very musical response to variations
in right hand technique. The electronic controls are quiet and work normally with no scratchiness. Once
you pick this guitar up you won’t put it down, lots of tone variation and lots of fun! Period chipboard
case included.
