When Norlin took over Gibson, they wanted to come out with new and innovative designs. Thus the Research & Development 77 was born in 1977. There were three models. A standard. No bells or whistles, a custom which was no bells or whistles but did come with electronics. And the ARTIST WHICH WAS FIRST CABIN AND INCLUDED RICH ENLAY, ebony fretboard ( not available anymore /exotic wood) active electronics design by moog which included a compressor and an expander, a TP-6 tailpiece fine tuning tailpiece, and a 25 1/2 inch scale. The guitars came in four finishes. Black, blonde, tobacco sunburst & cherry sunburst. The RD77 Artist in its original form was made for 3 years 1977-1979. At this point there were some changes before being discontinued. There were approximately 1000 guitars made. I personally played 3 of them for the better part of 7 years on tour and found it to be a great sounding dependable guitar which I finally retired in 1984. The guitar being made of maple is heavy and solid but well balanced and a workhorse. Think of them as the firebirds explorers or flying Vs of the 70's. This one has only been lightly or shopped played and is in wonderful condition for its age. All electronics working checked out and stock. Original case 100% includes case candy.
