1960 Ampeg Dolphin 518 Guitar Amp
This is a great 20 watt hand wired point to point guitar combo made by Ampeg in NYC in early 1960 (serial number 007007). The cabinet is the same size as some of Ampeg's more well known models from the era including the Mercury (M-12) and the Reverberocket (R-12R). This amp differs from those models as it has a more power (it is very loud), a separate power section/preamp section and no special effects. The control panel consists of: Power (off, standby, on), Bass, Treble, Ultra High and Volume. There are 3 inputs - they are labeled, guitar, instrument and Mike (yes, they spelled it Mike instead of Mic;). The tube lineup consists of a 6CG7, a 6SL7, 2 6l6's and a 5U4 rectifier. The tubes seem to have plenty of life left in them and are all high quality vintage tubes made by Sylvania, RCA and GE. The speaker is a 1958 Jensen P12Q - which despite being unoriginal to the amp, seems to be a good match and sounds very good. I have owned this amp for about 5 years and it has never given me any reason to bring it to a tech. It likely was serviced by the previous owner as,despite it's age, it has been very reliable for me - through many rehearsals and gigs. Cosmetically, the amp is in good condition. The chrome panel is no longer shines like when was newer and there are two holes in the top under the handle - where a different type of handle was once installed. I recently installed the original type leather handle that you see in the photos. One of the images I included is a scan that I found online that shows the Dolphin 518 on a page from Ampeg's 1959 catalog - here you can read the company's description of this model.
I linked a quick video demonstrating the amp. The higher notes are distorting a bit with my IPhone mic - but you get the idea of the amp's sound and function.
Thank you for looking and please let me know if you have any questions.
