Kay 1938 C4 Concert Blonde 3/4 Upright Bass

This is a beautiful, unique instrument. First manufactured in the 1930s, Kay string basses are now highly prized for their value, quality craftsmanship, and sound. Based on the serial number, rare blonde color, and shape, we estimate this bass was built in 1938, making it 84 years old. Fewer than 100 of this style were manufactured. Truly a piece of history.

This bass was played for many years by an Appleton-area jazz bassist who passed away recently. I had it professionally repaired locally by Taft Violins in 2020: new endpin, reinforced and straightened neck, glued seams, and bridge adjustment. It is obviously a well-loved instrument and shows the wear of decades of gigging. Tuning machines are rust-free and work well. The action is a bit low and buzzy, so it needs setup adjustment. I've been told that with some work, this is a $3000 - $4000 instrument.
