(USED) We’re often heard extolling the virtues of the small factories and shops that make up the bulk of our business… there is something comforting about the near-perfect fit and finish, not to mention the consistent high quality of sound that we’ve come to expect from our friends at Collings, Huss & Dalton and Bourgeois.  Every now and again, though, a guitar comes through our doors that reminds us that sometimes an astonishing instrument is the product of a single luthier’s vision, its skills and craftsmanship tied to one set of hands alone.

Now retired, California luthier Michael Hornick built a worldwide reputation for his distinctive Shanti instruments, and used examples are now extremely rare.  We are pleased to present this 1999 “SF” with a Sitka spruce top, East Indian rosewood back and sides, and elegant visual appointments for miles!  This is a small jumbo, 16 inches across the lower bout.  This guitar has a full 25.4″ scale, 1 11/16″ nut and 2 3/16″ string spacing at the saddle.  The tuners are gold Schallers with ebony knobs.  There is a cutaway for easy access to the entire fingerboard, and an armrest on the lower bout for comfort.  The nut, saddle and bridge pins are bone.

This instrument is covered top to bottom with gorgeous visual details.  The body, neck and peghead are fully bound in rosewood, with b/w/b trim and side purfling.  The rosette is a thin band of abalone flanked by rosewood on either side, and the soundhole is bound in rosewood.  The book-matched rosewood peghead overlay has a wonderful dove inlay. The heelcap has a wonderful bonsai tree inlay, which ties into a paper lantern theme in the backstrip and end graft.  If you like miters, this guitar is rotten with them!  The clear pick guard is perfectly flat, no peeling or bubbling.

The condition is excellent, with no structural issues, only some minor finish checks here and there and a single 1/8″ ding on the top in the lower bout.  The frets are extremely clean, next to flawless.  There is an endpin jack installed, but the electronics have been cut, so the guitar is currently without pickup.

The sound is, in a word, fantastic.  Round and full, with ample bass and dark, musical highs, easily one of the finest Indian rosewood guitars currently in our inventory.  It is a prize.
