This Mokusei or "made of wood" model guitar was made 55 years ago in 1967 by Hiroshi Tamura, one of the most highly regarded luthiers in Japanese history.

Like other famous Japanese luthiers of that era, Hiroshi and brother Mitsuru Tamura learned guitar-making during apprenticeships with the best guitarmakers in Spain in late 1950s/early 1960s. After their return to Japan, the Tamura brothers were making superb quality flamenco guitars that easily challenged guitars made by the most famous Spanish luthiers.

Hiroshi began to make standard classical guitars in 1966 largely patterned after guitars from the Madrid School. Hiroshi gathered international and domestic acclaim because his guitars had a deeply resonant "Spanish sound" often favored more than the dominant Ramirez brand made in Madrid. Because he used similar techniques and bracing, Hiroshi earned the nickname “Tamirez”.

This guitar is set up at the 12th fret at 3.68mm on the bass 6th string and 3.2mm on the 1st treble string. It is very easy to play. There is a thin vertical crack along the right side of the G string (refer to picture 4) that doesn't affect its sound. I am not even aware of it when playing.

This guitar has good volume and a warm velvety tone throughout its range with very good separation and sustain. It has solid rosewood back and sides. The top looks like cedar but I am not certain. It has a few small dings that are barely noticeable and the "new-ish" Gotoh tuners are in wonderful shape and operate smoothly. All in all, in remarkable shape for its age. String scale is 650mm.
