PRODUCT BACKGROUND
The UNIVOX SR55 was introduced in 1971 by Merson Musical Products (a division of Unicord Incorporated, a Gulf + Western Systems Company). In addition to UNIVOX products, Merson was also the exclusive U.S. distributor for Marshall products (primarily amps) during this time. UNIVOX products were manufactured under the Unicord division of Merson until it was bought out by Korg in early 1975.
Because it was so popular among both professional and amateur musicians, Korg continued its production for several more years as the Korg MiniPops 3. It remained essentially unchanged during both production runs. The UNIVOX model was sold either with or without an optional carrying handle (this particular unit was never equipped with a handle). Weighing in at 7 ½ pounds, not only was the SR55 easy to gig, but it proved to be rugged as well which helped justify the 1971 retail cost of $225, or the equivalent of more than $1,500 in today’s economy.
Officially named the UNIVOX SR55 Super Rhythmer “Computer”, the SR55 boasts rhythm, sound, and variation selections, a full-range tempo control, and tone and volume controls to create nearly infinite sound and rhythm combinations.
Watch the demo video I've recorded so you can hear each of the individual sounds and rhythms. Near the end of the video there's a link to another video in which I go into more detail about the control functions and operation, including combining rhythms and sounds.
Rhythms include 36 variations for Fox Trot/Swing, as well as Waltz/Viennese Waltz, Bossanova 1-2, Cha Cha, Rock 1-2-3-4, Tango, Samba, Rumba, Mambo, Bequine, Ballad, Baion, Habanera, and Western. Two or more rhythm selections may be combined to create custom rhythms. Sounds include, Bass drum, Claves, Cowbell, Conga, Cymbal, Maracas, Snare drum, Bongo (large), and Bongo (small).
