About This Listing

Custom handmade guitar from Luminous Guitars in Portland. It's in very good condition apart from some finish cracking and a few minor scuffs I tried to picture. There is some subtle figuring on the neck that is hard to capture in pictures and the finish is super smooth and glossy despite the nitro finish. All components are high grade including hand wound Onamac pickups with 4-way switching. Plays and sounds terrific-it strikes a comfortable balance between vintage and modern features. It holds its own against the nicer American Fender Teles I’ve been fortunate enough to play, but it costs much less than anything remotely comparable from Fender. Full specs and original description are below as well as links to the builder's pages. Feel free to ask any questions, make offers, etc. Cash is preferred but trades will be considered.

Original Description:
The Luminous Centerline Standard is a classic instrument with a depth of appearance and features that bring it to the modern age. Built by hand using a refined combination of modern and traditional luthiery and woodworking techniques, it is made to be comfortable, inviting and soulful from the very first moment.

This Centerline Standard features a three piece Ash body with a custom dyed, hand sprayed 3-color Natural Burst. Ash is the most classic wood for building this style of instrument, imparting its famously plucky, bright tone and long sustain. The body is specially contoured for comfort. A “tummy cut” and 1/2”-rounded edges on the back eliminate sharp corners. Traditional Telecaster construction uses a 1/8” round that can be a little sharp for a long playing sessions. On the bass side of the body’s front, where the picking arm contacts the corner, a 1/2” round accomplishes the same purpose without sacrificing the clean appearance of the flat top. A thin nitro finish gleams and protects without sealing the wood’s natural resonance in plastic.

The Centerline addresses the Telecaster’s most significant shortcoming: the chunky neck joint. What has traditionally been an enormous 1-1/8” thick rectangle at the heel is sheared down to a very comfortable 3/4”, rounded and hand carved for superior feel and access all the way up the fingerboard. All playing surfaces of this Centerline guitar beg to be touched.

The neck is constructed from quarter sawn Eastern Maple and features a gorgeous Madagascar Rosewood fingerboard. The 9.5” radius fingerboard features 22 extra-tall/medium-width frets and white clay dots. Its hand carved C profile strikes a balance between true-vintage fat and modern thin. It feels cozy along the full length for players of all hand sizes. The thin nitrocellulose on the back of the neck is sanded to a satin finish for superior motion.

The electronics were selected to bring out the best in the wood’s natural tone. The Onamac Windery Vintage Tone pickup set is run through a 4-way switch to give traditional pickup combinations in addition to a series signal path. In series, the neck pick runs through the bridge rather than beside it, making a more robust tone with higher output than when the two are run in parallel. These pickups are vintage-correct in output with very fine harmonic clarity. If you want singing classic tone, look no further. They are hand wound by Kerry Learned at Onamac Windery in Washington state. In his words:

"A hand crafted Tele style set with world class clarity and tone. Constructed with all the very best materials; black fiberboard flatwork, heavy copper plated steel base plate and the bridge coil comes standard with white string wrap. The neck has a nickel plated nickel-silver alloy cover.

The pickups are wound with 42 awg plain enamel on the bridge and 43awg heavy Formvar on the neck. Leads are vintage style waxed cloth pushback wire. The lightly chamfered alnico 3 magnets in the neck and alnico 5 in the bridge both are manufactured to my own formulation and specific sizes.

Wound to 7.5k, 7.8k they have enough umph to cut through while occupying that sweet spot that makes for a clear articulate tone throughout the range."
