Up for sale is a Kosth model #80 4-Octave Marimba (F3-F7) with wooden bars. The bars are made of a hardwood (not rosewood but a little harder than padauk - someone else might know what wood they used on these instruments but I’m not sure). The bars are graduated:

-Width: from 1.75” to 1.25”

-Depth: from ⅞” to ⅝”

-Length: from 14.75” to 5”

This instrument seems to estimate around $1200 in good condition, but since the one I have for sale could use some work, I’m letting it go for $600. I would probably keep the instrument and get it fixed up myself if I had more space, as it’s a cool range and unique brand/make, but I’m trying to clean up shop a little bit at the moment.

I purchased this instrument from a school district, and it seems like it’s been used a good bit, as it has its fair share of issues:

  • The bars are overall sharp compared to a tuner, and there are some that are way off from the rest of the keyboard (as can be heard in the sound demo) as well as 3 bars that definitely appear to be cracked/dead: F4, Bb4, C5 (shown in the sound demo). There are also surface scratches on almost all of the bars. I would recommend getting the bars retuned and refinished somewhere (Century, Fall Creek, etc.), or you could play as is, but it might be difficult tuning-wise with those clunker bars that are off from the rest of the instrument.

  • The resonators are a bit dirty and have some minor scratches and dents (as can be seen in the pictures). That being said, they’re all intact and functional. Some minor work could be done on the resonators to try to remove dents/paint over scratches/deep clean insides/etc., but is not necessary.

  • The frame definitely has some wear (as can be seen in the pictures) ranging from chipped paint to some cracked/missing wood. This being said, it is still functional, and the previous owner(s) added a homemade lower support bar (in addition to the upper support metal bar) which helps the frame be a lot sturdier. However, the side supports that connect to the upper support metal bar are missing, unfortunately.

    • One caster needs to be replaced as it falls out and doesn’t lock anymore - I didn’t have any laying around that fit the hole, so I decided to leave that to the discretion of the buyer. A second caster should also probably be replaced, as it is larger and a different style than the rest.

    • Overall, you could leave the frame as-is, especially if it will be a mostly permanent setup, or you could have it worked on or replaced altogether.

I did a rough/basic cleaning (mainly wiping off the worst of the dirt) of the frame pieces, resonators, and bars, but I wanted to leave more deep/detail work up to the buyer. I did restring the bars, as the previous cord was unserviceable.

I don’t have boxes to ship this in, so I’d really like to sell locally. If that doesn’t pan out, I’ll definitely look into shipping the instrument. The instrument does not come with a cover. If purchasing locally, I’ll throw in a couple of pairs of mallets of your choosing.
