About This Listing

Len Letourneau 2015 Canadian Made Classical - Custom Hand Crafted - Spruce & Cocobolo - Excellent Condition Used - Hiscox Hardshell Case Included

We have this stunning and brilliant sounding Len Letourneau classical in on consignment. It's in excellent condition with some minor cosmetic wear that I will detail below, but everything works perfectly and the guitar plays great and sounds incredible!

For those who are not familiar with Len Letourneau, he is a custom classical guitar builder based in Morinville, Alberta, Canada. His designs are based on Daniel Frederich's guitars, while he utilizes a V-Neck Joint, a Spanish foot, individually crafted rosette inlays, and beautiful rosewood fingerboard, bridge & ebony binding with 7-ply wood purfling. The guitar is crafted using a solid spruce top, Cocobolo back & sides and a Hondurian Mahogany neck. It is equipped with a bone nut and saddle, Gotoh machine heads and has just been restrung with new Savarez strings.

The guitar also includes a $300.00 value Hiscox hardshell case.

The French Polish that Len uses to finish his guitars allows for the woods to resonate freely, giving the guitars a more dynamic and open voice than equivalent guitars using lacquer finish. The French polish looks great as well, with a nice shine too it that shows off the stunning woodgrains below. However, it is not the most durable finish, so small nicks and scratches and scuffs will show up quite easily. Despite this, the finish is more easily repaired than other finish types, so any luthier experienced in French Polish should be able to help return it to its former glory without significant costs. Those in the Edmonton area could bring it to Len in Morinville directly for this.

The guitar's tone has a pronounced bass response with a full low end that you can feel in your chest. It's midrange is smooth and unintrusive, giving way to bell like trebles that have good sustain and a clean tone with full presence. The fundamentals are always clear and immediate, making it easy to hear each note clearly in any context.

As mentioned above, the guitar does have some cosmetic blemishes. Most of these are in the form of small scratches or dents in the French polish on the top below the strings around the soundhole and below the bridge. None of them are very large, and can only be seen when they are catching the light the right way. There are a couple that look like there is a small dent in the wood itself, though these are small areas maybe .5mm by 2mm. The most noticeable blemish though may actually be a small dark patch on the spruce top near where your right arm rests. You can see it in the images of the full top. I'm not sure if this is a discolouration of the wood, or something in the finish, or perhaps a stain from after it was finished. There is also one small area on the back that you can feel a dent, though this may be a blemish in the wood that the French polish style finish isn't disguising as other finishes might. Lastly, the most significant damage is where the guitar rests on your leg. My guess is that someone had a metal zipper on their pants and sat with it for a while, scratching up a 3cm by 5cm patch fairly significantly. I missed it when I was taking my photos as I don't usually image the guitars from that angle but I can send pics upon request. The scratches are just in the finish from what I can tell, so this too should be able to get cleaned up by being re-finished. That being said, this area of the guitar is resting on a surface any time you play, so it is very discrete.

Overall the guitar is clearly hand crafted. While it not "perfect" in the same way that many production guitars are, the care and attention to detail poured into the guitar is very evident when you hold it, play it, see it or hear it. There are many incredible classical guitarist's in our area who absolutely love Len Letourneau's guitars, and I can certainly understand why. It's the sort of guitar that wants to be played. When you see it, you want to pick it up, and when you hold it, you want to play it, and once you hear it, you don't want to stop playing. It is a guitar that inspires creativity with its feel and tone, it just asks me to try things that I may not think to on another inferior instrument.

Negotiations are always welcome.
