About This Listing

This is the rare SML "Gold Medal" Saxophone of which around 5000 Altos and tenors were hand built between 1955-1960 by the Strasser, Marigaux Lemaire company in Paris. As there is a lot to read on the web about these instruments I can only say that this one is a wonderful example. it has been played quite a bit and the (SML´s most expensive!) two-tone finish is worn. it features rolled tone-holes and the playful flowery engraving, many adjustment screws and a terrific low end response, almost tenor like, an instant "Big" sound on alto. Many have referred to these altos as a perfect blend of American and french saxophone design, and indeed, it feels for me like a Martin with a Selmer SBA core sound if I should describe it. It has had a recent high quality overhaul with black roo-pads and black resonators and comes gig-ready in an old but protective french case as pictured. Despite the lower price, this sax is a serious competitor to any Selmer from the same decades...
