About This Listing

Ruth Armitage was a gifted young violinist from Chicago who joined the USO during WW1 to play for the troops in Europe.
She was performing in France in 1917 with this violin when my grandfather, the youngest Colonel in the US Army, saw her onstage and was smitten. They married, then they divorced and she settled in Paris in the late twenties where she lived until 1969 when she gave me her violins.

While touring with the USO, she was instructed to remove any labels from her violin, so any information was lost over 100 years ago.

I can no longer play violin and brought it to a reputable violin shop to explore selling it. They in turn sent it off to two specialists, one of whom consults with Antiques Roadshow and had this to say:
With the instrument and information we have, our collective best evaluation is that the violin is probably from southern Germany in the mid 1800s. The top does not appear to match the rest of the violin " possibly Czeck. In fully restored condition, the violin could be in the $6-$8000 range.

The restoration work they recommended was all cosmetic with the exception of a neck reset that is not currently necessary.

It is such a fine and expressive fiddle that Simon Mayor, the superb English mandolinist and violinist, asked if I might sell it.

I am offering it at $4600 with an ultra-high-grade, leather-clad, French-fit
Lifton case with a form-fitting canvas&leather zippered case cover with bumpers and a good quality Glasser bow.
