Sonix SLS-STD '56 MLS type gold top <> Bacchus Deviser etc. <> Very RARE <> Original Momose Case
I am offering this very rare Sonix branded Custom Craft Guitar 1956 style gold top
This very rare Sonix example is a Deviser produced 1956 style gold top, with the typical two P-90 pickup foot print. Deviser is the parent company of Bacchus, Headway, Momose, Seventy Seven, etc., among other MIJ branded guitars. This example was made by Deviser for Sonix; basically a custom order. Sonix is a music instrument retailer in Japan.
This very rare example is basically a re-badged Momose MLS-STD. This example has the same four digit serial number format, and the same embossed serial number font, as used for the earliest Momose MLS-STD examples from the mid 2000s. This example also has the identical 'Custom Craft Guitar' logo as seen on those same mid 2000s Momose MLS-STD examples. This example also includes the original Momose branded, MLS-STD hard case.
Examples of the Momose MLS-STD are typically very difficult to source. Why? Because they are typically offered infrequently. When they do show up on the used market MLS-STD examples are typically snapped up very quickly. The rarest examples of the MLS-STD are the extremely rare '54 style, and the very rare '56 style, as humbucker examples are typically ones known to be offered. Any Sonix branded LS example with the P-90 foot print is without a doubt one of the rarest LS examples known to be produced by Deviser. To ascribe this example as a 'unicorn' or 'rare as hens teeth' would certainly be appropriate. If you are seeking a top quality Deviser produced 1956 style gold top, then look no further.
BODY BACK: Mahogany, 1 piece, rift sawn
BODY TOP: Maple, 2 piece, center seam
NECK: Mahogany, 1 piece, quarter sawn, extended tenon
NECK THICKNESS: .890" @ fret 1 & .962" @ fret 11 ('58 neck size range/chunky with shoulder)
FINGERBOARD: Rosewood
FRETS: .096" W x .056" H
FRET CONDITION: Very good to excellent, slightly detectable wear
NUT: Bone
TAIL PIECE: Aluminum
BRIDGE: ABR-1 style, wired
PICKUPS: mini humbuckers (non-original)
POTS: 500K ohm
TOP COLOR: Gold
FINISH: Nitro Lacquer top coat (very thin)
FINISH TYPE: Non Buffing
WEIGHT: 8 lb. - 14 oz.
SERIAL NUMBER: 0093 (same four digit format & same embossed font as seen on early Momose MLS-STD)
INCLUDES: original Momose hard case
VINTAGE: The pots are not date coded, and there is no attached warranty card. However the 'Custom Craft Guitar' logo, and the embossed four digit serial number do offer clues. Based on the attributes present on this example, and based on the conversion by Deviser/Momose from the embossed serial number to the inked on serial number, I would place a production range for this example from circa 2007, circa 2008. The attached/original Momose MLS-STD 'Custom Craft Guitar' veil hard case is also contemporaneous to the mid/late 2000 era.
ORIGINALITY: Looks to be original except for the mini humbuckers, and the caps. A previous owner replaced the original P-90 pickups with mini humbuckers, which have the same footprint as P-90s, and the tone caps have also been changed. IMHO, this very rare instrument deserves to have a good set of P-90s re-installed.
CONDITION: I rated this very rare example as 'very good.' It has a very few minor dings, and three small areas where the finish has flaked; most notably at the two tail piece studs, and at the bridge pickup. The pot knobs all have the typical tiny cracks, some nearly invisible, and this is merely a very minor cosmetic issue that does not at all effect function. There is a small bit of very minor buckle rash on the body back, that is pretty much impossible to capture in a photo. The instrument could likely pass as 'excellent' with no problem but just to be safe, I am rating it as 'very good.' If you are seeking an instrument in 'new' condition then please look else where.
